English: In this hand-colored aquatint by Descourtis after Jean Frederich Schall, the governor of the island of Île de France is visiting the families of Paul's and Virginie's mothers. Virginie's mother is an aristocrat reduced to poverty, while Paul's mother is a peasant woman, but the governor treats them as equals despite their dissimilar ranks.
