Summary[edit]

Description

Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) is exactly what it sounds like. It involves cutting or other damage to female genitalia and is a practice which has been carried out for thousands of years. It is a deeply embedded social norm that is done because it always has been. It is considered essential for marriage and preparation for womanhood. The practice is widespread in Africa and parts of Asia.

Yvonne Kabore is a peer educator in Zitenga village in central Burkina Faso. She was trained by Gascode, which receives support from the UK government via the UNICEF and UNFPA Joint Programme.

Peer educators run group discussions involving the whole community – from girls and women, to boys, men and village elders.

The UK is working to reduce the practice of FGM/C by 30% in at least 10 countries in Africa in the next 5 years. Find out more about our work: bit.ly/1krV9Qk
