Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pen-y-Clip tunnel. This is the western of the two Pen-y-Clip tunnels constructed in 1935 to carry the A55 main North Wales Coast road round the formidable headland of Pen-y-Clip just to the west of Penmaenmawr. In 1993, another, longer, tunnel was constructed just to the south to carry the westbound traffic, leaving the old tunnels to carry eastbound traffic. Pedestrians wishing to walk between the neighbouring settlements of Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr must use this narrow footway (not all protected by barriers). A separate cycle route involves two crossings of the carriageway and is almost universally ignored by cyclists, who are much more likely to use this footway. The railway can be seen down on the left nearer sealevel and passes through an avalanche shelter rather than a tunnel proper.
