Summary[edit]

Description
English: Head from a portrait statue of a philosopher, found in the Antikythera shipwreck. From other fragments of the statue found with this head it appears that the figure was standing holding a staff in his right hand and extending his left in an expression typical of orators. The figure wore a long himation (cloak) and sandals. The clothing and posture suggest that he was a Cynic philosopher, and it has been suggested that the man depicted may have been Bion the Borysthenite. The shaggy hear and full beard and moustache are typical of all kinds of philosophers. The sculpture is dated around 240 BC and is now held in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
