Français : Cette ampoule contient du gaz Tritium (40 mCi) qui se désintègre en Hélium 3 en émettant un unique électron d’énergie maximum de 18.59 keV. La paroi de l’ampoule est recouverte d’un phosphore (de type ZnS:Ag ou à base de terre rare, la couleur dépendant du dopant) qui émet de la lumière par l’absorption de l’électron de désintégration. Au bout d’une demie-vie, il y aura 2 fois moins d’électrons donc deux fois de lumière. Le tritium remplace avantageusement le radium dans les montres luminescentes, car ce dernier était bien trop actif.
Lorsque l’électron est absorbé dans la paroi de l’ampoule, une certaine quantité de l’énergie cinétique de l’électron est convertie en rayonnement de freinage (toute les particules accéléré rayonnent de l’énergie) appelé aussi « Bremmsstrahlung ». Ce rayonnement X de très faible énergie, peut traverser la paroi de l’ampoule et interagir dans la chambre à brouillard par effet photoélectrique (cet effet étant l’interaction prédominante des rayonnements gamma dans la matière étant donnée la faible énergie). On observe ainsi des agrégats de condensation qui entourent la source : le photo électron n’a pas suffisamment d’énergie pour faire sa propre trace, mais il peut localement ioniser d’autres atomes créant d’autres ions périphérique. Ce sont sur ces ions que se condensent les vapeurs d’alcool formant ainsi les petits nuages de condensation. |
