Summary[edit]

Description

The fantail is one of New Zealand’s best known birds, with its distinctive fanned tail and loud song, and particularly because it often approaches within a metre or two of people. Pity the tail isn't fanned in this shot!

The fantail is perched on a flower stem of harakeke (NZ flax). The background is the flax leaves. This plant is unique to NZ and is one of our most ancient plant species.
