| Description |
English: Map of the southern portion of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico, dated to the year 1843, found in an 1846 book about a survey of the Isthmus proposing the creation of a canal in the region. The map and survey are the result of a project launched by José de Garay in 1842, under a grant given by the provisional government of General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The chief engineer of the expedition, Gaetano Moro, proposed the canal as a way of linking the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico (in a project preceding the Panama Canal), though a railway was built instead many years later, after several failed attempts. The map marks the position of relevant rivers, towns and other geographic details of the region.

El mapa y la expedición fueron el resultado de un proyecto impulsado por José de Garay en 1842, como parte de una concesión otorgada por el gobierno provisional del general Antonio López de Santa Anna.
