Summary[edit]

Description
English: Plaque on Mount Batten Breakwater This plaque commemorates the building of the Breakwater in 1881. Around 1917 the whole of the Mount Batten headland was taken over by the Royal Naval Air Service as a seaplane base, and access to the public was denied until the mid 1990's when the MoD relinquished the area. It became RAF Cattewater, later RAF Mount Batten, where Aircraftsman Shaw (Col T E Lawrence) worked on fast Marine Rescue boats in the 1930's, and was the base for Sunderland flying boats patrolling the Western Approaches in the 1939-45 War. The breakwater was heavily refurbished before public access resumed and it is now a popular place on Plymouth's waterfront.
