Summary[edit]

Description
English: Plaques on the Sun Monument, Wentworth Castle grounds, Stainborough The lower one has I think the same wording as the upper one, which has become eroded by the weather. The monument was erected in 1746 by William Wentworth as homage to Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, a remarkable character who defied the conventions of the time and asserted her rights as an individual. One of her achievemants was to introduce inoculation against smallpox, a technique that she discovered in Constantinople in 1716 whilst her husband was ambassador there. The original 'sun' on the top was a large bronze disc described as having radiating twisted spikes. Unfortunately no illustration of it has been found as yet.
