ペンチ。ちなみに、 ハサミ（鋏・剪刀）は二枚の刃で布・紙・金属板を挟むようにして切る道具のこと(一丁・一挺・一本)。書類・切符などに穴を開けるパンチも含み以下述べる道具の名称の中でもっとも広い語義をなす。ペンチはpinchersの訛で針金を切断したり曲げたり捻ったりするのに用いるハサミ。内側にぎざぎざがある。ニッパー（nippers）は主に針金・電線・銅線を切断するのに用いるペンチに似たハサミ。やっとこは「やとこ」の転（促音便）で漢字ははさみと同じ鋏。針金・板金・熱鉄などを挟むための金属製のハサミである。また英語でペンチに当たる語はpliersで、この語は広義にはやっとこもさす。またnipperも日本でいうニッパーの語義だけでなく、くぎ抜きやピンセット、手術用具の鉗子も含む。
