21 March is UNESCO World Poetry Day – declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in 1999. The earliest poem to be found in our collections comes from a prisoner who petitioned Governor Grey in 1847 to be released from jail, on the grounds that he was drunk when he committed his crime, so it didn’t count. In support of his petition he included an epic poem of many stanzas detailing his troubles and woes. The Governor was unimpressed and the unfortunate man had to serve the remaining six months of his sentence. [Archives reference: IA 1 1847/2473]. Other places poetry can be found in our collections include class records and School Journal records from the Department of Education, the War Archives, miscellaneous personal papers of government figures such as Walter Nash and Richard Seddon, field books of land surveyors, who were a poetic bunch – and especially the records of the Patents and Copyright Office, where the featured archive lives. This lively tale of Wellington circa 1917 narrates how the unfortunate speaker has been bled dry of funds by the good times to be had in the town. It is full of contemporary slang. To be “on [one’s] uppers” means to be stone broke, and a “Flossie” is another word for a floozy. “Cheer up, Sam” was a popular song at the end of the nineteenth century. The Grand Hotel was on the corner of Willis Street and Manners Street – site of the Grand Arcade now. Harry Bryant was a returned soldier, and applied to have this poem copyrighted in October 1917. In his application, he noted that the author of the poem was one deceased Edgar Vincent. Because he could not trace any of Vincent’s relatives or representatives, his application was declined. His second attempt to copyright a poem for publication, a soldier’s tale called “Sing Me To Sleep”, was more successful.
