Summary[edit]

Description
English: Strapwork design alms box set into external wall of the Guildhall, Barnstaple, Devon, on the Butcher's Row side, inscribed: "Poor Box S.B. Mayor 1895". This was therefore erected by Samuel Berry, Mayor of Barnstaple 1894-5 (Lamplugh, Lois, Barnstaple: Town on the Taw, South Molton, 2002, List of Mayors, p.159). The strapwork design is notable, being a revival of a style popular in the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and King James I (1603-1625) which thereafter fell suddenly out of favour and rarely appears after that period. A profusely decorated strapwork plaster ceiling c.1620 survives in Barnstaple in the "Golden Lion Coaching Inn" (in 2017 "The Bank Restaurant") in Boutport Street. Unless this was simply a copy of an existing ancient box, the selection of this antiquated style was perhaps a deliberate expression of the fact that in 1895 the concept of alms boxes was long-antiquated
