Ambroise Vollard a été un visionnaire de l'art moderne. Ce portrait de Cézanne fait partie des oeuvres à l'origine du cubisme car, dès 1899, en plein art nouveau, il montre la voie en décomposant l'image en formes géométriques élémentaires pour en faire un tout. C'est la raison pour laquelle Cézanne est unanimement considéré comme le père de l'art moderne.
