Description |
Portrait of English antiquarian, historian, topographer, and herald William Camden (1551-1623). Camden is best known as author of Britannia, the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Annales, the first detailed historical account of the reign of Elizabeth I of England. The portrait is an engraving by James Basire (1769-1822) modeled after a painting by British artist W.P.J. Lodder (Loder) (active 1783-1804). Lodder's painting is, in turn, modeled after a painting by Flemish artist Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (1561-1635 or 1636). |
