Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The corner of Kurfürstenstraße (not to be confused with near by Kurfürstendamm) and Potsdamer Straße, in the Berlin neighborhood of Nordschöneberg, also called Potsdamerkiez (“Kiez” pron.: keats, is Berlin argot for neighborhood), or just plain “Potse”, the vulgar ring of it is not incidental. Since its development at the south-western border of then Berlin in the late Nineteenth Century, the area has been an entertainment and red-light district well known beyond the borders of Berlin. To this day prostitution is common place on the street of the Potsdamerkiez, that has been home to artists and everyday people, immigrants and locals and remains so to this day. In the 1980s the Potse was at the heart of the West-Berlin squatters' movement (Hausbesetzerszene). It is a somewhat rundown and unassuming place with lots of quirks and hidden treasures. Like this Woolworth's department store doing business in the utilitarian post-World War II reconstruction architecture on the corner by the bus stop and the Subway (U-Bahn) station “Kurfürstenstraße” on the Berlin subway line U1.
