Description
Black diorite macehead in a globular form with large central piercing. Originally mounted on a wooden handle.Found in excavations at Abydos.It is believed to date from around 3000 BC.The believed method of production was that a fragment of diorite igneous rock was shaped and ground down using an abrasive and then drilled using a bow drill.This mace head was once part of the Rustafjaell Collection and was auctioned off in 1906.It passed from the ownership of BWJ Kent to Harrogate Galleries and Arts in the late 1960s
