Description
Deutsch: Johann Paulus (1896-1971) stammte aus Neuwied, wuchs in Troisdorf auf und war gelernter Eisenwalzer. Er wurde am 30. Juni 1915 gemustert und trat am 5. November in das 7. Garde-Infanterie-Regiment ein, das zwischen Maas und Mosel sowie bei Verdun kämpfte. In seinem Soldbuch sind zudem das Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 201 sowie das Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 64 verzeichnet, die ebenfalls an der Westfront eingesetzt waren.

Am 12. Oktober 1917 wurde er in der Nähe von Lens nachts gegen 24 Uhr durch eine Granate schwer verwundet und musste die folgenden zwei Jahre im Lazarett verbringen. Allein in den Wochen nach der Verwundung wurde er 26 Mal operiert. Bereits 1916 verbrachte er wegen einer Augenverletzung oder Bronchitis einige Zeit in Lazaretten, u.a. in Jarny, Freiburg/Br. oder Schwandorf. Da er ein Auge und ein Bein verloren hatte, wurde er am 24. Juni 1919 als Schwerkriegsgeschädigter aus dem Dienst entlassen. Nach dem Krieg heiratete er, wurde Vater von fünf Kindern und baute für seine Familie ein Haus in Siegburg. Seine Kriegsverletzungen begleiteten ihn sein ganzes Leben lang, er musste ihretwegen 60 Operationen über sich ergehen lassen.

Seine Kriegserlebnisse hielt er später schriftlich unter dem Titel "Erinnerungen an meine Soldatenzeit 1915/17" fest. Sein Enkel Rolf Paulus nahm diese Unterlagen zur Basis für sein Buch "Der Eisenwalzer Johann Paulus: Zwischen Krieg und Leben".
