Whilst we're having plenty of fun, this trip won't go down in the annals as one of the greatest for three reasons. One is that a lot of the people we want to see aren't too well. Another is that it has been SO cold that it's restricted what we can do a bit. The final one kicked in today and that's that we've landed in a week with two days of, if not general, then very co-ordinated strike action. For today and tomorrow we've got no trams, no Metro and very limited buses. That restricted things a bit, but we thought we could brave a walk into Itakeskus where the huge shopping centre is. It turned out to be a very pleasant walk, as the temperature had warmed up to -5 and there was no wind. You could have stayed out in it all day. Blessedly, one group that didn't seem to be on strike were the army of workers driving the snow clearing equipment throughout the city. This chap was sweeping the pavement we were on, and as you can see his device uses a brush rather than a plough. It seemed pretty effective. |
