Summary[edit]
DescriptionPropellantless deorbiting tech.jpg |
English: Propellantless deorbiting technologies differ in their dimensions, safety and efficiency aspects. The atmospheric drag sail can accelerate the reduction in orbital altitude with the increased surface area which simultaneously increases the collision risk with other space assets. The electrodynamic tether can be used for increasing and reducing the orbital altitude with the magnetic Lorenz interaction. The cm-thick tether can severely damage other space assets. The ionospheric plasma brake tether is tens-of-μm-thin which makes it nearly harmless to other space assets (comparable to natural micrometeoroid impacts). On its own, the IoPB tether deorbits rapidly thanks to the atmospheric drag and the low ballistic coefficient of the tether. More info: https://space-travel.blog/plasma-brake-f9de377f2b21 |
