DescriptionPu'ukohola Heiau at Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kawaihae, Hawaii.jpg |
From the Pu'ukohola Heiau NHS visitors center, I caught my first glimpse of Pu'ukohola Heiau itself. This photo does not do the structure justice. It is tremendous. Pu'ukohola Heiau means "Temple on the Hill of the Whale." It was built under the direction of King Kamehameha I and was completed in 1791. It was built entirely by hand with no mortar, in less than a year. The red stones were transported by a human chain about 14 miles long, from Pololū Valley to the East. Construction was supervised by Kamehameha's brother Keliʻimaikaʻi, involving thousands of people. A respected kahuna (priest) named Kapoukahi suggested building a luakini heiau (sacrificial temple) to gain the favor of the war god Kūkaʻilimoku. It must have worked. Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands under one leader. |
