Description

Pvt. John Wallace (CP 994), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private John Wallace, Company K, 1st Maine volunteers, shows a wound to his right shoulder sustained on March 25th, 1865, at the battle of Fort Fisher, Virginia. Caption reads: “Gunshot fracture of head of humerus. Pvt Jno. Wallace Co K 1st Me.”

History is on reverse: “John Wallace, Priv. Co. K 1 Me. Vols aged 29. Admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, August 15, 1865 convalescent from G.S.W. Right shoulder ball apparently severely injuring head of humerus, wounded at Fort Fisher Va, March 25, 1865. The constitutional state of patient was very good when admitted to this hospital and parts had entirely healed with exception was performed in this case. The arm was kept quiet in splint and simple dressings to wound. Small speculae of bones removed at intervals since admission to this hospital. Prospects as to usefulness of limb very favorable. Patient was discharged from the U.S. Service October 4th 1865 in good condition.”
