Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pyrrhotite-sphalerite from the Tertiary of Nevada, USA. (collected in the 1990s)

This zinc ore specimen is from Nevada's Ward Mine, which targeted a polymetallic skarn deposit. The mine principally produced zinc, but also copper, lead, silver, and other metals. The zinc ore mineral at the site is sphalerite (ZnS, zinc sulfide), which is the dark material in this sample. The brassy gold colored material is a type of fool's gold called pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS, imperfect iron monosulfide), which attracts a magnet. On fresh crack surfaces, the pyrrhotite here is pale brassy, but on slightly oxidized surfaces, it's darker brassy colored.

The skarn deposit at the Ward Mine formed by contact metamorphism and metasomatism of Paleozoic carbonates and shales during intrusion of a porphyritic quartz monzonite body about 34 million years ago. This date corresponds approximately with the Eocene-Oligocene boundary.

Locality: Ward Mine, Ward Mountain, Ward Mining District, south of the town of Ely, White Pine County, eastern Nevada, USA
