DescriptionQabiilka Ahmed Gurey waa dhulbahante.jpeg |
The photo has been taken in February 2007, Emir Ahmed Gurrey, known to the Ethiopians as Ahmed Gran. There is no doubt that the emir was a member of one of the pre-Somali tribes that surrounded Harar. Ibrahim's father's birth in Sanaag implies that Gurey's clan came from Sanaag. The Sanaag region was under Ibrahim al Ghazi's leadership and he was also the Caqil of his tribe. Besides his military skills, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al Ghazi was also an Imam who served as the General in charge of the Adal region. Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al Ghazi was the name he was originally known as. The nickname he was given was Gurey, pronounced 'the left-handed one' in Somali. Emperor Galawdewos led an Ethiopian force at Lake Tana on February 21, 1543 when Ahmad's army was attacked. Ahmad was shot and killed by the outnumbered Portuguese and Ethiopian forces during the battle. The loss of their leader caused his troops to scatter and flee 10. In Dembya province's Woyna Dega district, a Portuguese fusilier was responsible for killing al-Ghazi during a battle. As soon as the Muslim empire of Ethiopia was conquered, it disintegrated, and most Christians who converted to Islam in 1529 returned to Ethiopian Christianity. Some authorities, such as Richard Pankhurst, attribute Imam Ahmad's success to the presence among his followers of an elite company of matchlockmen. If this is the situation, then this battle was the first time Ethiopian forces were confronted by a force equipped with firearms. On 23 March 1559, the imperial army met Nur ibn Mujahid force in the Battle of Fatagar at a place named Nech Sar, where, according to a Harari chronicle, Gelawdewos was killed in battle.
