Summary

[edit]
Description

Geodes are small to large, subspherical to irregularly-shaped, crystal-lined cavities in rocks. They form when water enters a void in a host rock and precipitates crystals. The most common geode-lining mineral is quartz.

From exhibit signage:

Located near Lake Monroe in southern Monroe County, Indiana, the Valley Mission Geode District is known for its quartz geodes with large, lustrous barite crystals. The barite crystals often have a greenish iron sulfide zone near the terminations. Several ravines in the area cut through the bedrock, which is in the Harrodsburg and Ramp Creek Formations of the Middle Mississippian age. The geodes are in the soil and clay just above the bedrock, which gives most of the outside color of the geodes a brownish, yellowish, or tan color reflecting the color of the top soil, the clay, and the Ramp Creek Formation. This display gives a few samples of the quality specimens that occur at this location. The surrounding area near the town of Harrodsburg is full of outcrops containing geodes, making it a very popular and well known Indiana geode collecting location.
