Summary[edit]
DescriptionRare steam engine - sad loss - geograph.org.uk - 1003070.jpg |
English: Rare steam engine - sad loss This is a long story but worth telling. The engine was built by Perkins in the 19th century to run on steam at about 450 psi - a phenomenal pressure at that time. It was supplied to a limestone quarry at Betchworth near Dorking. It was later restored by apprentices at the maker's works, by now Baker Perkins. When the works was closed for relocation this and another engine became surplus and it seems this ended up in the Cadbury Collection at Bournville. The only apparent link is that Baker Perkins are big in food preparation plant and Cadburys almost certainly use some of their kit.
Sadly, at some point Cadburys decided this little collection was largely surplus to their requirements and as far as we can learn the engine was subsequently scrapped - a great shame as it was unique. The other engine from Perkins was acquired by a private collector. If anybody falls over this on their travels, please let me know. |
