Summary[edit]
DescriptionRat-tailed maggots - geograph.org.uk - 1371881.jpg |
English: Rat-tailed maggots. Larvae of Hover-flies [Syrphidae]. The larvae are aquatic, feeding on organic sediments, with long telescopic breathing tubes. The adults are garden-friendly, feeding on aphids and other pests, and do what it says on the label - the adults are generally bright striped and can frequently be seen hovering around flowers. These larvae were in water in a bucket in my garden - the main body is about 5mm long, and the breathing tube up to 10mm. For the adults, see two nice images by Kirsty Coghill 959765 and 959767. |
