Summary[edit]

Description
English: Redundant underground seismic station, South Creake A very full description of this site is to be found on Subterranea Britannica http://www.subbrit.org.uk/cgi-bin/webdata_roc.pl?fid=988306564.040003&query=pagenum%3D4%26cgifunction%3DSearch%26County%3DNorfolk&cgifunction=form

The key sentence from that entry reads: "When contacted, the MOD stated that 6 former ROC [Royal Observer Corps] sites, including South Creake form part of the MOD network of seismic stations used in connection with nuclear test ban verification".

The station went to auction on 17 July 2006 upon the instruction of Defence Estates and was described as: a redundant underground seismic shelter approximately 15 ft by 7 ft with a separate area for a WC. It is set in a plot of 0.07 acres some 20 ft below ground approached by a steel vertical ladder through a hatch. The site is subject to possible listing by English Heritage.

I don't know whether it was or was not sold then or what is its current status. As of 20 March 2007 the hatch, in the foreground of my photograph, is unsecured and opens easily with a counterbalance mechanism. I though better of going down until I have someone I trust with me up on the surface!
