Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tucked behind the historic St. Peter's United Church of Christ in West Seneca, New York is its former Religious Education Building, seen here on a February 2023 afternoon. Dedicated in February 1959 after ten months of construction, this $160,000 annex is the newest and largest addition to West Seneca's oldest extant church building and a fine example of the work of the Buffalo architectural practice of Shelgren & Whitman, whose penchant for harmonizing forward-looking Modernism with the respect for tradition so often demanded of the era's church design is plainly evident here. In this sprawling T-shaped structure, single-story lateral wings exemplify the former with their rectilinear forms and flat roofs cantilevered over the exterior walls, while the soaring front-gabled roof of the central spine hearkens reassuringly to familiar tropes. It's connected to the original building via a glass-walled breezeway. Originally containing eight Sunday school classrooms, the church office, a fellowship hall, and kitchen and dining facilities, it's been home since 1991 to Page 1 Preschool, serving children age two to five.
