Summary
[edit]DescriptionRemains of hangars at RAF Hell's Mouth - geograph.org.uk - 646561.jpg |
English: Remains of hangars at RAF Hell's Mouth A block of four Bellman hangars were situated on the other side of the perimeter road (which can be seen in the foreground). Although only a grass airfield, the base was not only a relief landing ground for RAF Penrhos SH3333, but also a bombing school. Blenheims and Whitleys regularly flew in and out of the airfield. On one memorable occasion, in August 1944, a Polish pilot managed to save his crew and himself by belly-flopping a Vickers Wellington bomber, which had suffered engine failure, on to the undersized base and afterwards to fly it out again.
