Summary[edit]

Description

Detail of the Rhodes family plot in section 20 of Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

Daniel P. Rhodes (1814 – 1875) founded the coal and mining company Rhodes & Co., the forerunner of the M.A. Hanna Company. He also constructed several railroads, founded Peoples Savings & Loan, and was a founding member of Cleveland's first school board.

James Ford Rhodes (May 1, 1848 - January 22, 1927) was co-founder of Rhodes & Co. with his father, Daniel P. Rhodes. He later sold his interest in the business to his brother-in-law Marcus A. Hanna. He retired to write books. His "History of the Civil War, 1861-1865" won the Pulitzer Prize in 1918, and he was later President of the American Historical Association.

Robert R. Rhodes (1845 – 1916) was the son of Daniel and brother of James and a partner in Rhodes & Co. His 1872 home at 2905 Franklin Boulevard is one of the finest Italianate Villa style homes in Cleveland. He was a founding trustee of Riverside Cemetery.
