Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Rhododendron on the edge of Matley Bog, New Forest. Rhododendron ponticum thrives in milder, wet climatic conditions, where there are poor, acidic soils. This wet heathland just south of Matley Bog provides just these conditions. Toxins in the plant make it unpalatable to large herbivores and so grazing does nothing to check its growth, which is much more rapid than the surrounding native bog myrtle. Plenty of reading about this invasive species here: http://www.countrysideinfo.co.uk/rhododen.htm
