Summary[edit]

Description
English: The camera looks downward towards the midships deck of the C. A. Larsen at center. A large swath of canvas covers Commander Richard E. Byrd's aircraft. The deck continues into the distance, off-center to the left. Behind the canvas, 3 smoke stacks stand in a row. Cabins sit atop the deck beyond the smoke stacks. To the right of the covered airplanes, the ship's crew lines the deck rails and faces towards the dock at right. Beyond the ship and the near dock, the Port of Los Angeles stretches into the distance. Text from newspaper caption: The Norwegian Whaler C. A. Larsen Arrived in Los Angeles Harbor Yesterday and immediately began loading the 10,000 tons of whalers' and explorers' supplies destined for Commander Byrd's South Pole thrust and for use by the Ross Sea Whaling Company operating in the most southern of all waters. Commander Byrd and fourteen other members of his party will go aboard today and the sturdy craft will set sail with the flood tide at 5 p.m. today. The Byrd planes, loaded at Norfolk, Va., were aboard and in perfect condition.
