| Description |
English: Ripple-marked bedding Silurian mudstones have been quarried here for a long time. In the disused, outer margin of the quarry the bedding planes can be seen clearly. They are considerably inclined today, as a consequence of major folding and faulting during the Caledonian continental collision. The tectonic pressure at the time was one of the key reasons why the muds have become slates. The key indicator that these rocks are of submarine origin, and were once horizontal, is the presence of this superb ripple-marking at the top of one of the thin beds. Ripple-marking is caused by water and wave movement over soft sediment - in this case around 420 million years ago. |
