Summary[edit]

Description
English: River Coquet, Warkworth Medieval Bridge

The old medieval bridge over the River Coquet, at the north end of the village of Warkworth, was built in the last quarter of the 14th century. It has two segmental stone arches each with double arch-rings, and four ribs. A gatehouse is located at the southern end of the bridge.

Warkworth Bridge is one of only two fortified medieval bridges in Britain (the other is in Monmouth) and it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (List Entry Number: 1020741) and a Grade II Listed Building (List Entry Number: 1041732 Historic England). For almost 600 years, the bridge carried all traffic through the village until a new bridge was built to the east of the original one in 1965 to carry the A1068 towards Alnwick in the north and through the village towards Amble to the south and the old bridge became for pedestrians only.
