| Description |
Dr. Li-Piin Sung (left), a physicist with the NIST Engineering Laboratory’s Materials and Construction Research Division, describes the need to reliably measure and predict the service life of polymers, such as plastics, exposed to real world conditions. Using a device called a SPHERE which stands for Simulated Photo-degradation via High Energy Radiant Emission, NIST scientists create and control a number of environmental factors, including sunlight and humidity to more accurately measure their long term effects on building materials. Dr. Sung’s audience included students and faculty from Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, MN.
