Summary[edit]
DescriptionRuins of Limekiln House - geograph.org.uk - 862563.jpg |
English: Ruins of Limekiln House All that remains of the Limekiln House, an important staging point in the long journey south on the drove road from Scotland. Here cattle were rested for a day or two. Drovers generally did 9 to 12 miles per day but needed pasture or stances where the 100 to 300 head of cattle could graze for a few days before continuing their journey south.
As befits the name the moor was an important source of good quality limestone although the stone was transported down to the kilns in the dales where fuel was readily available. The building is mentioned by name in a document of 1577. In the 1841 census John Pearson was publican although by this time the drove road was beginning to feel the impact of the growth of the railways. The inn closed in 1897.
