English: Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld receives a tour of the Amazon Surveillance System (Sistema de Vigilância da Amazônia SIVAM) complex from Maj. Gen. Pinheiro in Manaus, Brazil, March 23, 2005. SIVAM is a ground and air surveillance system that provides Brazil the capability to detect forest fires, illegal mining and deforestation in the Amazon region. In addition to such environmental benefits, SIVAM also serves various military purposes, including the ability monitor air space and detect illegal drug trafficking flights.
