Description
English: Map of the battle of Hogland between Sweden and Russia in 1788.
Suomi: Suursaaren taistelun kartta. Luotausten ja tarkkojen mittausten pohjalta laaditut merikartat helpottivat merisodankäyntiä Suomen vaikeakulkuisissa rannikkovesissä. Ruotsin 1750- ja 1770-luvun merimittauksen tuloksena ilmestyivät ensimmäiset Johan Nordenankarin painetut yleismerikartat v. 1789 mutta laivastojen operaatiot olivat jatkossakin pitkälti luotsien varassa. Kustaa III:n sodan (1788–90) ruotsalais-venäläisten taistelujen eri vaiheita kuvaavia karttoja laadittiin sodan jälkeen niin Ruotsissa kuin Venäjälläkin omien saavutusten korostamiseksi, mutta myös tieteellistyvän sotataidon opetustarkoituksiin.
