English: Rusting barge tied up off Falkland Gardens, Gosport The barge is alongside a similarly rusting ship (beyond it). Its presence here is this highly restored area, with Gosport marina to the north, and the Falkland Gardens and Esplanade de Royan to the south, is incongruous. I have no idea what it is doing here. Someone, whether connected with the barge owner or not, has taken the opportunity to make a political point by tying notices to the barge. They read "Taxi for Viggers, one way to France s'il vous plait" and "Fowl Play". These refer to a contemporary scandal concerning the expenses of Members of Parliament. Sir Peter Viggers, the MP for Gosport, had claimed £1645 for a duck house, and who also owned a large house in France. He agreed not to seek re-election. The Spinnaker Tower across the water is also in the square. |
