Italiano: Oratorio San Benedetto
L'ex oratorio della Confraternita laica di San Benedetto si trova in via del Roscetto nel quartiere di Porta Sole. La forma attuale risale alla ristrutturazione del 1598 dell’architetto perugino Valentino Martelli. L'interno, a pianta rettangolare, è privo di transetto e della parte absidale. E’ ad una unica navata scandita da finte lesene, in tre campate. La volta a cui la foto si riferisce è opera dell’artista umbro Mattia o Matteuccio Salvucci (1610), è dipinta a grottesche con brani che raffigurano la vita di San Giovanni Battista e San Benedetto. Le decorazioni delle lunette (1665) sono opera di Giovanni Francesco Bassotti e Giovanni Battista Mazzi, raffiguranti le storie del Vecchio Testamento. L’oratorio fu demanializzato dopo il 1861.

Note storiche sulla Confraternita titolare dell'Oratorio La Confraternita, disciplinata da San Benedetto, è documentata già dal 1320 ed è tra le più antiche della città, insieme a quella di S. Antonio e S. Fiorenzo. Come altre Confraternite laiche era un’associazione nata per scopi non solo religiosi, ma anche culturali ed assistenziali. Era titolare oltre dell’Oratorio, di un ospedale per l’assistenza ai pellegrini poveri e bisognosi. Nel Medioevo l’opera svolta dai numerosi ospitali era fondata sul concetto della medicina come servizio pubblico ed alla concezione religiosa della cura, come prescritto anche nella Regola di S. Benedetto. Al pittore “ufficiale” del tempo, il perugino Benedetto Bonfigli, la Confraternita commissionò un gonfalone (1471), che veniva portato in processione allo scopo di esorcizzare la peste; il dipinto fortunatamente si trova tuttora nel posto originale ovvero nell’altare della vicina chiesa, appartenuto alla stessa Confraternita in Santa Maria Nuova.
