English: SSSI at Harbury Spoilbank (9) A footpath through the shrubby woodland at the SSSI.
Warwickshire Wildlife Trust administers Harbury Spoilbank, a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The reserve is situated between the B4452 road and the Banbury-Leamington section of the ex-GWR London-Birmingham railway. This spoilbank covers approx seven hectares and is now a rich calcareous environment with grassland, scrub and woodland. When the railway was built in the 1840s, clay spoil from the deep cutting at Harbury was tipped on the south side of the line. Today, the site is one of best butterfly habitats in warwickshire (28 different species have been recorded here). The lime soil supports shrubs such as hawthorn, blackthorn, dog rose, wild privet and spurge laurel; flowers include yellow wort, scabious, fairy flax, gentian, cowslips, and several species of orchid. There is a population of Muntjac deer, rabbits and foxes. |
