Das Bild beschreibt simultan den 8.Kreis der Hölle - den Höllenkreis des Betrugs. Der schlangenartige Wächter Geryon (li.oben) hat die beiden Jenseitswanderer, Dante und Vergil, zu den Elendsgruben gebracht. Hier sieht man im oberen Graben Kuppler, die von gehörnten Teufeln gepeitscht im Kreis getrieben werden. Jason ist mit einer Krone versehen und büßt dafür, weil er die Liebe von Medea missbraucht hat. In der unteren Elendsgrube sind Schmeichler und Dirnen in einem Sumpf von Kot und büßen ihre ewige Strafe ab. Illustration nach der Dichtung von Dante's Göttlicher Komödie".
