Santa Cruz Parish, a Roman Catholic Church located at 140 Argyle Street in Toronto, was built 1887-1888 for its original occupant, Dovercourt Road Baptist Church

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Santa Cruz Parish is a Roman Catholic Church located at 140 Argyle Street, Toronto, ON M6J 1P1. It serves the city’s Portuguese community. The building was constructed in 1887-1888 for its original occupant, Dovercourt Road Baptist Church. The book Toronto Old and New, published 1891, includes the following description: “In 1888 the present edifice was built and opened for public worship. The church is of Romanesque style, built of pressed red brick, with terra cotta and red stone trimmings. The exterior is plain, chaste and well-proportioned.” The book Robertson’s Landmarks of Toronto, 1904 edition, adds: “It has a dimension of 86x57 feet, and has two square towers, containing two gallery stairways, the one 70 feet high and the other 53. Between these, on Argyle Street, is a triple arched open porch, affording entrance into a spacious vestibule.” The architects were Langley & Burke (see The Globe of 3 October 1887, page 8). The cornerstone ceremony was held on 1 October 1887 (see The Globe of 30 September 1887, page 8) and it opened 16 September 1888 (see The Globe of 17 September 1888, page 1).
