Sanxay (Vienne).
Le théâtre.
Le complexe comprenant le théâtre, un temple et un ensemble thermal, est situé sur le territoire des Pictones (ou Pictons, Pictavi, Pictaves), peuple de la Gaule qui occupait la région de Poitiers. Les constructions sont des Ier et IIe siècles. Une grande partie du site, fouillé par le père Camille de La Croix*, dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle a été remblayée et il ne reste visible que les vestiges du temple, des thermes et du théâtre.
Le théâtre s'adosse à une colline, ce qui permettait de limiter les travaux de maçonnerie. Il pouvait accueillir entre 6000 et 7000 spectateurs. Le plan d'ensemble est en arc outrepassé et non en demi cercle. La cavea** domine une orchestra circulaire d'une trentaine de mètres de diamètre. Les petites dimensions de la scène rectangulaire qui tangente l'orchestra laisse penser que les spectacles pouvaient se dérouler dans cette dernière.
Le temple. Le plan du temple, octogonal entouré d'une galerie cruciforme, est unique; l'énorme majorité des temples adoptant le plan carré, centré, de tradition celtique. On y pratiquait certainement un culte des eaux, mais le ou les dieux vénérés restent inconnus. Le vaste parvis, aujourd'hui sous un pré, devant la façade du sanctuaire, rejoignait les thermes. Au milieu de ce parvis un monument circulaire rappelant la margelle d'un puits et dont la signification est inconnue, fait penser à un putéal***, enceinte qui marque une endroit sacré, par exemple l'endroit ou serait tombée la foudre.
Ils sont parmi les mieux conservés de Gaule. Ils ont été construit sur un temple antérieur. L'ensemble semble être parti d'un temple, peut-être consacré à des eaux guérisseuses, transformé en thermes et agrandi à plusieurs reprises. On identifie trois piscines chaudes (caldarium) (ou deux et un sauna?), la présence d'une piscine froide (frigidarium) est incertaine.
