English: The couple was buried in the ancient cemetery of the Sephardic community on Mount Olives Jerusalem.
As the custom those days, their family name was not engraved on their tombstones rather the indication “Ashkenazi”, which points to their relevance origin. The tombstones were phrased by Sephardic persons, who constituted the majority of Jerusalem community at that time. Both tombstones are adjacent to each other, which may indicate on family relation between the deceases, this is also evident based from the text on the tombstone: Sarah tombstone writing: M’K [mekom kevurat/matzevat kevruat [place of burial/ tombstone of burial] The honorable lady Mrs. Sarah N’B [Nevat Beto] KeHaR [Kevod Harav] [His honorable Rabbi] = Haim [...] Ashkenazi Haim tombstone writing: M’K [mekom kevurat/matzevat kevruat] [place of burial/ tombstone of burial] The excellent Ha[cham] [Clever] KeHaR [Kevod Harav] [His honorable Rabbi] = Haim Ashkenazi The text on the table the Vilna synagogue mentions the names of Rabbi Haim’s two sons of– Rabbi Shmuel and Rabbi Eliezer. Haim immigrated to Eretz Israel with his wife Sarah in 1770 or 1772. the brothers Shmuel and Eliezer sons of Rabbi Haim Shabtls, the first “Vilna's Earls”descendants of Rabbi Moshe Ravkash. The grandfather of HaGra (ref: Areyh Morgnestern , The Return to Jerusalem, page 55) . Rayi”l Frumkin (Toldot HaChamey Jerusalem, third part page 72) recounts that R Haim that immigrated to Eretz Israel was the son of Rabbi Haim (this is not a mistake), the son-in-law of Rabbi Shabtai Hefetz from Vilna and grandfather of Rabbi Itzhak Elyiahu Landa. Haim immigrated to Eretz Israel with his wife Sarah in 1770 or 1772, together with Rabbi Azriel Mashklov - the grandfather of Rabbi Israel Mashklov- of the HaGra Students immigration leaders, died and buried in the cemetery on Mount Olives in the holy city of Jerusalem. על פי המסופר בכתובת שהיתה בבית הכנסת בווילנא, ושנחשפה לאחרונה בחפירה ארכיאולוגית, שנערכה בראשות ד"ר יוחנן זליגמן, עלו בני הזוג ר' חיים ושרה מוילנא לטבריה, משם העתיקו את מקום מושבם לירושלים ובה נפטרו. שרה בשנת תקמב 1782 וחיים בשנת תקום 1786 בני הזוג אכן נטמנו בבית הקברות העתיק של הקהילה הספרדית בהר הזיתים. כפי שמקובל באותם הימים, שם משפחתם לא מופיע על מצבותיהם אלא רק "אשכנזי", כנראה כציון המעיד על מוצאם המצבות נוסחו על ידי בני העדה הספרדית, שהיו רוב מניינה ובניינה של קהילת ירושלים בעת ההיא. שתי המצבות צמודות זו לזו, מה שיכול להעיד על קירבה משפחתית בין הנפטרים והדבר עולה גם מנוסח המצבה. מלל מצבה שרה : מ'ק [מקום קבורת/מצבת קבורת] האשה הכבודה מרת שרה נ'ב [נוות ביתו] כהר [כבוד הרב] חיים [...] אשכנזי מלל מצבה חיים: מ'ק [מקום קבורת/מצבת קבורת] הח'[כם] המעולה כה'ר [כבוד הרב] חיים אשכנזי נוסח הכתובת של השולחן מבית הכנסת בווילנא מזכירה את שני בניו של ר' חיים - ר' שמואל ור' אליעזר ר' חיים עלה ארצה עם רעייתו שרה בשנת תק"ל 1770 או תקל"ב 1772 האחים שמואל ואליעזר בני ר' חיים שבתל'ס, "רוזני וילנא" הראשונים, מצאצאי ר' משה רבקש, סבו של הגר"א (אריה מורגנשטרן, השיבה לירושלים, עמ' 55). ראי"ל פרומקין (תולדות חכמי ירושלים, ג', עמ' 72), מספר כי ר' חיים שעלה ארצה, היה בנו של ר' חיים (זו לא טעות), חתנו של ר' שבתאי חפץ מוילנא וסבו של הרב יצחק אליהו לאנדא. חיים עלה ארצה עם רעייתו שרה בשנת תק"ל 1770 או תקל"ב 1772, ביחד עם הרב עזריאל משקלוב, סבו של הרב ישראל משקלוב - מראשי עליית תלמידי הגר"א, וכי נפטר בהיע"ק, היא עיר הקודש ירושלים. יהודה (אודי) מזרחי-צורף, חוקר עצמאי של קהילת הספרדים ושל חלקות הקבורה שלה בהר הזיתים איתר את מקום מנוחתם של בני הזוכ ר' חיים ושרה וזיהה אותם |
