Summary[edit]

Description The friable brownish material occupying a large space in the apical portion of the lower lobe is a huge colony of Aspergillus. In sarcoidosis aspergillomas occupy ectatic bronchi as opposed to tuberculosis where aspergillomas form in cavities resulting from necrosis of lung tissue. The fungi in aspergilomas are saprophytic and usually do not invade surrounding lung tissue. Although usually asymptomatic, hemorrhage, sometimes fatal, may occur. Bronchiectasis is present in the upper lobe and large foci of fibrosis are seen in the lower lobe.
