Summary[edit]

Description
English: Sarcophagus in the Palazzo Altemps, part of the National Museum of Rome. Part of the Ludovisi collection, the sarcophagus is known as the "Grand Ludovisi". Fashioned from a single block of marble, the sarcophagus was found near the Tiburtina gate in Rome. It depicts combat between Romans and barbarians, and of course the Romans are winning. The center horseman is possibly Emperor Hostilian (Ostilianus), son of emperor Decius. Hostilian died in 251 AD. The sarcophagus is remarkable for its degree of detail.
