English: Wolmar Schildt (Wolmari Kilpinen) wanted to create a new Finnish writing system, where the long vowels were spelled with a caret over them. The letters ä and ö would be spelled ae and oe, as in latin. His goal was a more beautiful and faster way of writing.
Svenska: Distriksläkaren, fennomanen, ordsmeden och översättaren till finska Wolmar Styrbjörn Schildt, som också är känd under namnet Wolmari Kilpinen, föddes i Laukas den 31 juni 1810. Vid sidan av sina många uppgifter och prestationer hade han en särskilt betydande ställning då det gällde det finska språket och utvecklandet av den finskspråkiga utbildningen. Mest märks hans inflytande i Mellersta Finland, där han starkt påverkade inrättandet av det första finskspråkiga läroverket. På hans förslag grundades också Mellersta Finlands län. Man vet, att Schildt också drömde om och arbetade för att få det första finskspråkiga universitetet till Jyväskylä. Schildt dog i Jyväskylä 1893, så hans dröm om ett universitet uppfylldes inte under hans livstid. Schildt påverkade finska språkets utveckling genom att bl.a. hitta på nya ord. Nämnas kan bl.a. uskonto (religion), taide (konst), tiede (vetenskap), puoliso (make/maka), henkilö (person), och vankila (fängelse). Dessutom försökte han påverka finska språkets utveckling genom ett eget skrivsystem, där de långa vokalerna skrevs med en bokstav på vilken antecknades en s.k. cirkumfleks. Utöver detta skulle vokalerna ä och ö skrivas enligt latinet ae och oe. Som målsättning hade han ett vackrare och snabbare skrivsätt. Schildt fick impulser från utlandet bl.a. Ungern och Danmark. |
