He married Mary Dorothy Grey (1797-1889) (buried St Aidan Churchyard, Bamburgh, Northumberland[3]) eldest daughter of Robert Grey of Shareston, Northumberland. (A Naval Biographical Dictionary by William Richard O'Byrne, biography of Selby, Henry Donaldson[4]). He was born as "John Strangeways Donaldson", the son of Thomas Donaldson of Cheswick (son of James Donaldson (1702-1763) and Catherine Strangeways (1716-1762), a daughter and eventual sole heiress of Christopher Strangways (d.1734) of Cheswick (pedigree of the Cheswick, Strangeways and Donaldson families of Cheswick, Northumberland[5]) by his wife Mary Selby, sister of Henry Collingwood Selby (d.1839). Henry Collingwood Selby settled his property on Lindisfarne Island in trust for the use of John Strangeways Donaldson and his male heirs, on condition that he should adopt the surname Selby.
