Summary[edit]

Description

The woman on the right is playing the shamisen, a stringed musical instrument introduced into Japan between the 14th and 16th centuries.

I love the sophisticated fabrics used in both kimonos.

The design on the left looks like money plant (lunaria), printed or painted on the fabric.

I'm familiar with the design on the shamisen player's kimono from Western fabrics. The pattern has a fractal quality.

The photo was taken between 1914 and 1918 by Elstner Hilton. It is on the title page of Elstner's album.
